Not so trite, after all

When I first launched the Coach Minda website (May 2013), I made a personal commitment: write one blog a week.  I had researched the business side of blogging and how to reach readers who fit the profile of would-be clients, but I wasn't ready for that kind of approach. I just wanted to learn how to express my professional interests, in writing. And publicly.

Writing 52 blogs a year  (not exactly each week) has been challenging, nerve wracking, time-consuming. Difficult!

Months ago, feeling I should be writing more, but having nothing more to express (publicly),  I whispered to myself, "You don't have to write every week or even every two weeks. Just write when the feeling strikes. When you have something to say."

So the blog went from a weekly, to a bi-weekly, to a monthly and now, the longest interval yet, two months (since the previous blog).

I let myself off the hook because after a few years:
  • I no longer had a good reason to spend so much time struggling about what to write about and how to write it
  • I ran out of fresh perspectives, new angles and original ideas
  • I don't know what would be relevant to my readers - from Canada, the US, the UK, Brazil, China, Russia, Israel, Italy, India and Japan
  • I felt, with so much human suffering and misfortune in the daily news, it was trite to be blogging about adopting healthier perspectives regarding current life and work challenges, or how to deal with procrastination and perfectionism, or how to untangle time management problems

A few conclusions:
  • Motivation increases when you have a clear WHY about WHAT you want to do or accomplish. Without a clear idea about the goal and purpose of my blog and without a specific target audience to write for, it's easy to lose energy and drive
  • Too many options dilute focus. There is such a thing as too much freedom and too many choices. It creates distraction and diffuses effort
  • Conviction to do something comes with self-doubt about being able to do it well. Sometimes you just need courage
  • A fresh perspective is not always possible. Even though we are inundated with information about every subject under the sun, with plenty of insights and prescriptive advice on any range of subjects, there is room for more
  • Not so trite, after all. Optimism about our capacity for self-improvement, creating meaning in our lives and making our lives better, finally, is not trite.

When the feeling strikes,
Coach Minda

Dear Coach Minda,

I heartily approve of your decision to write when you feel the time is right, and I really liked what you said about too many options diluting focus.... so true!

Best regards,

Devi

Thank you Devi!

It's a good idea to revisit personal goals and re-assess if they are still front and centre. If not, scratch. If they are, well, there is work to do!

Hello Coach Minda,
As I was reading through your conclusions, I kept remembering an idea from TS Elliot. He said that there is just one truth and we need to keep finding it. So, I think that holds true for self-improvement of any kind. We need to keep moving towards being better people, and any perspective that rings true and helps us move in the right direction is just a good thing. So, thanks for continuing to write and find ways to move us along. Much appreciated.
Judy

Hi Minda, You should write when you are inspired because when something strikes you you will have the energy to get down to work. We all have a lot on our plates and we can't be inspired everyday or have something to say. The quiet is helpful for recharging so that we can charge again!

I'm actually inspired most days. I just don't want to do the hard work anymore writing about it!!! Thanks Catherine for backing me.
I'm okay with letting myself off the hook because I did what I wanted to do (write blogs). The catch is, not letting yourself off the hook for things you do want to do just because you are not inspired (like eat well or do more exercise) and find excuses.

Just to let you know -- we noticed the absence of your blogs over the last two months!

Is this your subtle way of asking me to please, please, continue enlightening and inspiring! Okay, if you insist. Thanks Charles.
